Roof Installation Steps That Come Before Nailing Down Shingles

Blog

When you hear the term "roof installation," you probably picture a roofer nailing shingles to the roof. This is an important step in the roof installation process, but as it turns out, it is basically the last step. Before roofers nail down shingles, they need to complete a few other roof installation steps, which you'll learn more about below.

Repairing the roof deck

After your roofers strip the old roof off, they will examine the roof deck. The roof deck is a wooden structure. It forms the base of your roof and keeps it structurally sound. If there are any boards that are split, rotten, or otherwise damaged, the roofers will remove and replace them.

Laying down underlayment

Once the roof deck is repaired, the roofers will lay down a material called underlayment. This is sometimes called roof paper, although it is not usually made from paper anymore. The underlayment basically forms an extra barrier between your shingles and your roof deck. If any little bits of moisture make it past the shingles, that moisture won't penetrate the roof deck and lead to rot.

Installing flashing

Flashing is metal sheeting that is usually placed around any raised structures that penetrate the roof. For example, if you have a chimney, your roofer will surround the chimney with metal flashing. Flashing is also often placed in the gullies where two parts of a roof come together. This way, it will help prevent leaks in these areas, which are the areas in which water tends to accumulate the most.

Installing vents

Roofs need vents. They allow heat to escape from the attic, which reduces the amount of heat that passes directly through the roof. This, in turn, helps reduce wear and tear on the roof over time. There are a couple of different kinds of vents including soffit vents, ridge vents, and box vents.

Installing drip edges

Finally, the roofers will put drip edges along the edges of the roof. This is a tough strip of vinyl or metal. It prevents leaks along the edges of the roof, which are usually the parts of the roof that fail first.

Once your roofer completes all of these steps, they can install the actual asphalt shingles. Now, if you watch your roofers working, you will have a better idea of what they are doing and why they are doing it. Contact a local roofing contractor to learn more.
